<title>2007 California Wildfires: Your Questions Answered</title>
    <link>http://web2announcer.com/go/2229567</link>
    <author>unknown@ma.gnolia.com</author>

Eighteen fires have ravaged Southern California this week, destroying more than 1,600 homes and causing more than $1 billion in damage. Our hearts go out to the individuals directly affected by this disaster.

While current attention is rightfully focused on the immediate toll on the communities that are suffering, the ecological impact has yet to be assessed. Nature.org spoke with Scott Morrison, a biologist with The Nature Conservancy in California, about the potential impacts, whether climate change played a role, and why conservation is crucial in minimizing such disasters.

Drought, a fixture in much of the West for nearly a decade, now covers more than one-third of the continental USA. And it&#039;s spreading. As summer starts, half the nation is either abnormally dry or in outright drought from prolonged lack of rain that could lead to water shortages, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, a weekly index of conditions.

When development teams submit their bids next month to build what could be San Francisco&#039;s tallest skyscraper, one key detail will be missing: the actual height of the building. The tower proposed for First and Mission streets is part of larger efforts to build a new terminal for buses and commuter trains on the same block.
